What would you say?

My husband, John, is simply the most awesome #1 support.

When I said I wanted a Rhoades Car, for bicycling. he didn’t flinch. Before our solar assisted vehicle arrived, he had installed a ramp up to the double doors and moved things around so we can use part of his shop for a garage for the Rhoades Car.

I read: “Sauna use has also been shown to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).  BDNF is like fertilizer for our brains.  Indeed, increased BDNF can improve cognitive function and memory.” (Dr John Day)

With the help of my sweetheart…

“Another benefit of infrared sauna… Detoxification of Chemicals and Heavy Metals… The skin is a major detox organ, and sweating through the skin is a critical human detox function, yet most people don’t sweat regularly or enough. The body is very effective at eliminating toxins via the skin (and the liver, and the poo), but the skin side of things only really works if you make your body sweat. But many of us sit in air-conditioned indoor environments all day, and even gyms with temperature control can be a tough place to work up a serious sweat. So in these type of situations, you completely miss out on a major source of toxin elimination: the skin.”

When I read about the benefits of infrared sauna… John didn’t flinch. When our very own infrared sauna arrived, he immediately set to work setting it up out in his shop, although it further cramped his work space. Additionally, he sits in the sauna and reads to me until our allotted time is up.

So… when I read Ben Greenfield said: “People who had four to seven sauna sessions of at least 20 minutes each, had the greatest benefits”, I thought…it would be much more conducive to daily use if we move the sauna inside our home. John came up with the perfect location. BUT… it will require significant effort. He suggested, we could remove the large garden tub from our master bath (since we always opt for the shower, anyway). I love the idea and convenience such a transition will provide.

Perception

“There is GOOD IN EVERYTHING, IF ONLY WE LOOK FOR IT.” __Laura Ingalls Wilder
(From Ryan Holiday’s blog)

” Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the classic series Little House, lived this, facing some of the toughest and unwelcoming elements on the planet: harsh and unyielding soil, Indian territory, Kansas prairies, and the humid backwoods of Florida. Not afraid, not jaded — because she saw it all as an adventure. Everywhere was a chance to do something new, to persevere with cheery pioneer spirit whatever fate befell her and her husband. That isn’t to say she saw the world through delusional rose-colored glasses. Instead, she simply chose to see each situation for what it could be — accompanied by hard work and a little upbeat spirit. Others make the opposite choice. Remember: There is no good or bad without us, there is only perception. There is the event itself and the story we tell ourselves about what it means.”

SO… before I learned my diagnosis, I was suffering with TMJ. I perceived my jaw was offset, and my teeth didn’t line up. It was painful and painfully slow eating. I solicited help from a Cranial Massage Therapist. It helped short term, but the offset and pain returned. Three adjustments… same result.

At the time, I salivated so profusely, I’d resorted to sleeping with a cloth in my mouth, to wick off the moisture, so my attemting to swallow didn’t keep me from sleeping. Additionally, the corners of my mouth had developed sores.

After receiving the diagnosis, I made an inquiry at a health food store, asking what, if any, recommendations they could make for someone with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. They said Hemp CBD oil. I resisted at first, but went back and made a purchase. Then John & I took our month long roadtrip for our 50th anniversary.

FIRST, I noticed the sores at the corners of my mouth had cleared up… which was doubly impressive, going from a humid climate to dry arrid Utah. I wondered if I took something like coconut oil, I would have the same results?

NEXT, I realized my jaw had realigned, my TMJ pain was gone and I, as a result, was able to eat more quickly. I attributed the change to the CBD oil… but also wondered … perhaps the jaw had relaxed and normalized as a result of the progression of the disease?

ADDITIONALLY, I felt like my sleep was more restful when I used the oil. My primary care doctor told me, his recommendation was to obtain a state card so I could obtain the oil from a licensed facility, where the quality and purity were guaranteed. I followed his recommendation, and have been pleasantly surprised… that the Oil I get now is no more expensive than the oil from the health food store.

The TMJ has not returned… the sores at the corner of my mouth have not returned. And now, my sloth like eating speed is related to how I handle the fork and chew… but not related to pain.

The salivating and droolong have not improved, but from the dentist’s point of view, extra saliva protects my teeth from decay. Hey, we count our blessings as we recognize them.

So… like Laura Ingles Wilder… I try to optimistically view my challenge
as an adventure. Each symptom provides a chance to try something new, to persevere with cheery pioneer spirit whatever fate befalls us. I say ‘us’, because John is such a trooper, ever mindful of my frailities, and ready to accept additional responsibilities.

Already, he prepares my breakfast, while I begin my morning exercise routine. We simply choose to see each situation for what it could be — accompanied by hard work and a little upbeat spirit.

Exercise Element #1

Sometimes reading through what you should be doing and knowing how to put it Into practice can be two very different things. John just asked me what I was listening to… and I responded “watching someone doing exercises on youtube.” Even if I KNOW exercise is key.. I’m reminded of the saying… ‘I love work, I can watch it all day.’

[I NEEDED THIS pep talk by Sarah of Invigorated.]

It’s as important if not more important than taking your medication. You wouldn’t miss a dose of your medication, and you should prioritize exercise the same way. Medication helps with symptoms in the short-term, but exercise is the only treatment method shown to improve symptoms for the long term.

When you use BIG movements, you’re working specifically to counteract the small, slow movements that come with reduced levels of dopamine. Consciously retraining your brain in large ranges of motion starts to create new movement patterns and changes the way your brain sends signals to your body. This is called neuroplasticity and requires lots of practice, practice, practice!

Element # 1: BIG, POWERFUL MOVEMENTS

When you use these types of movements, your working specifically to counteract the small, slow movements that come with reduced levels of dopamine.

Make your movements big and powerful:

Remember: Information is great, but to get results you have to take action!

KNEELING EXERCISES:

Remember: You significantly increase the power of your body’s dopamine when you exercise effectively! So, get out there and get moving!

Staying Hydrated

I found this great information on the Invigorated site:

Staying Hydrated with Parkinsons: Going Beyond “Drink More Water”

glass of water with orange slices

“You need to drink MORE WATER!”

You’ve heard it a million times.Every health practitioner worth their salt has recited these words hundreds if not thousands of times to their clients. However, there is more to staying properly hydrated than just chugging 8 glasses of water every day and the implications can be life changing.

Imagine the potted plant in your home that sits in the corner.

Similar to a water-starved plant, your cells can become chronically dehydrated . Re-hydration has to be strategic.

Similar to a water-starved plant, your cells can become chronically dehydratedRe-hydration has to be strategic. If it hasn’t been watered in a while the soil gets dry and crumbly. When you add water at this point the soil isn’t able to absorb a majority of it and it slips through the cracks and out the bottom of the pot. No matter how much water you pour over that poor guy he’s not going to re-hydrate properly!

This is similar to what happens to your cells when you have been chronically dehydrated. Our cells are less able to properly absorb the water we put into our system. This excess of water in our digestive tract leaves us feeling water-logged and making frequent trips to the bathroom.

Similar to the wilted plant, our body can’t perform its daily functions without proper hydration to your cells.

Proper cell hydration is a fundamental issue in wellness. Without it:

  • You can’t get proper nutrients into your cells (here come achy joints and painful muscles)
  • Your mitochondria (which are the energy-producing “powerhouse” of each cell) can’t produce the energy you need to heal and function
  • You can’t make digestive enzymes or hormones (hello constipation, nutritional deficiencies, and anxiety)
  • You can’t repair your DNA (fast track to looking and feeling older than you are!)
  • Your neurons are less efficient at sending electrical signals to each other (brain fog, anyone?)
  • You can’t flush out nasty toxins that contribute to disease and disarray.
  • As you can imagine, regaining the ability to properly hydrate can have a drastic impact on how you move, think, and feel on a day-to-day basis. Implementing the following into your daily hydration routine is an important part of regaining your vitality:

Balance Your Sodium

Adding 1/4 tsp of Celtic or Himalayan sea salt to a quart (32 oz) of water helps assist your kidneys at properly absorbing water from your bloodstream. Specifically using Celtic or Himalayan sea salt offers 60+ trace minerals and electrolytes that assist your cells in absorbing the water molecules and using them to your advantage.

(Afraid of overdosing on sodium? 8 ounces of this cocktail contains 115mg of sodium compared to 8 ounces of Pedialyte that contains 260mg.)

Use a Water Filter

It’s important to remove them from your daily routine whenever you can. Remove toxins and chemicals from your tap water with a filtration system.

Hydrate in the Morning

Start your day with a glass of water as this is the time of day where your body is housing its highest concentration of toxins and is most dehydrated. (Add a squeeze of lemon if you’re feeling fancy and want a digestion boost.)

Pick the Right Water Bottle

Avoid plastic water bottles whenever possible (even if it says it is BPA-free) as chemicals released from these bottles can also contribute to your daily toxin load. Choosing stainless steel or glass bottles are best.

Cheers to your most hydrated self!

Part of my protocol

Besides Exercise… in conjunction with WBV & Tandem biking . Diet… focusing on gut health, bone broth, fermented foods, . avoiding white flour, white sugar . Infrared Sauna . Alternatives… Oxygen, Amino Acids, Frankincense oil . Nutrituinal supplementation… Three Kings, (see the blog post) , Mucuna Pruriens ( a medicinal herb famous for it’s neuro- . transmitter and hormonal balancing properties) . Serropeptase (as recommended in the link below)

 Serropeptase & Parkinson’s

12/29/18 Dr. Berg recommended … Serropeptase  3 x’s a day on empty stomach  suggesting enzyme may break down or dissolve build-up of protein (alpha synuclein) in the brain

This is the only place I’ve even heard of serropeptase, but I was able to find it at the recommended strength… . I’ve only been on it a month and 1/2 but I feel like it is helping.

I found this additional insight on ‘MyParkinsonTeam.com’: “Now known as Lewy bodies, these deposits of alpha-synuclein (aS) protein are understood to be one of the most common causes of dementia in people with parkinsonism.”

Infrared Sauna

Both movement disorder neurologists I’ve seen indicated … although not enough data has been gathered, to allow them to prescribe infrared therapy, they had heard some positive feedback and encouraged me to “feel free to try it.”

We read the claims:
“Infrared sauna surrounds you and penetrates deeply into your joints, muscles and tissues increasing oxygen flow and circulation.”
“Helps to remove impurities from your cells, specifically the cells inside our fat where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals.”
“As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder to pump blood at a greater rate to boost circulation. This increase in your metabolism will burn calories.”
“Infrared sauna therapy can help keep blood pressure within healthy levels, lower cholesterol, reduce chronic pain and be of therapeutic value to patients with chronic congestive heart disease.”

“In animal models of Parkinson’s, near infrared treatment has been shown to rescue dopaminergic neurons, … In addition, near infrared light treatment corrects the abnormal firing activity of neurons in deep subthalamic brain regions that occurs in parkinsonian conditions. Various animal models of Parkinson’s disease shown improved motor control and locomotor activity, as measured by both mobility and velocity, after near infrared is applied.”

We tried the infrared sauna at the gym. Although our insurance provides a membership at no additional expense to us, there were draw backs. We had no control over the temperature. If we went in the morning, it wasn’t warm enough to produce any sweat. It was twenty minute drive each way for 20 minutes of heat. John is waiting for the VA to schedule hip surgery, so if my chauffeur didn’t feel like exercising, it was just shower and go home.

So, because I intend to leave no clue uninvestigated… we set up our two person Infrared Sauna into a sweet place in John’s workshop. It also has
Chromotherapy, also called color light therapy, which is the process of restoring balance to the body by applying color.

My Essential Oil story

To explain my love of the essential oil of frankincense, I need to share a little of my history. In 1992 I was experiencing repeated urinary tract infections. It was determined I needed surgery to re-attach my bladder. Next thing I knew, while the doctors were working on fixing me, they had also removed my uterus, reporting it had been full of fibroid tumors. And then, they told me I would need to have annual mameograms because of the large number of fibroid tumors in my bosom.

I had just been introduced to essential oils, and more specifically, I’d learned that frankincense is anti-tumoral. Being pro-active, I began putting two or three drops of frankincense on the bottom of both feet each evening.

Why the feet, you may ask? Because the foot has the largest pores and I was given to understand the oils would be absorbed and disseminated to all the cells in the body within twenty minutes.

I was totally convinced… Frankincense is the reason, just a few years later the mameogram report was… “You have no fibroid tumors. You have the smoothest tissue I’ve seen”

In my search for brain health for people with Parkinsonisms I found the study below. I aim to begin applying essential oils to my feet again!

In studies performed in Vienna and Berlin Universities, researchers discovered that sesquiterpenes, a natural compound found in essential oils of Vetiver, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, and Frankincense, can increase levels of oxygen in the brain by up to 28 percent

Not all essential oils are created equal. Not all are cold pressed. Some are cut with harmful chemicals. or diluted. If you find a cheep version, you probably are not getting a good product.

I was recently invited to join a ‘shopping club’ with a focus on helping us save money while eliminating products that contribute to pollution. They focus on products for our health, our environment and our quality of life. I placed my first order last night. And I was delighted to see they have included essential oils in their product line. And I’d be delighted to send you an invite to join the ‘shopping club.’ If you want to know more, simply message me on the ‘contact form’ page.

Three Kings

I knew Dr. Kyle D. Christensen when we lived in Payson, Utah. We even attended emergency preparedness classes in his home. One thing I observed, while in his home was a personal infrared sauna. [More on the sauna in another post] Dr. Chrtstensen is very sharing with his insights. The following came across my desk in July, 2018. Perfect timing for my research. I had to try it.

Turmeric & The 3 Kings

The Golden Spice

Dr Kyle Christensen DC July 30, 2018

Turmeric is referred to as the golden spice and was considered more valuable than the precious metal gold during the time of Christ. It is thought that the Spice Traders known as the Magi or 3 Kings presented to the Christ child Gold (Turmeric), Frankincense and Myrrh as gifts of healing as well as wealth.

We now combine the rich tradition of Gold/Turmeric, Frankincense and Myrhh for your benefit to reduce pain and inflammation. These classic herbs carry with them healing power to body, mind and spirit. These herbs have been documented to assist in the recovery of Arthritis, Autoimmune Disease, Neurologic Diseases, Type II Diabetes, Lung conditions, Alzheimers Disease as well as Cardiovascular Disease. Fenugreek has been added to this formula because of the great enhancing effect when combined with turmeric. Fenugreek has repeatedly been shown to increase the bioavailability (the bodies ability to use) of turmeric by 24.8 to 45.6 times! Wow! We just couldn’t leave it out.Turmeric – latin name:Curcuma longa is used as a food and traditional medicine for:

  • Rheumatic pain
  • traumatic swelling
  • Menstrual problems
  • As a Blood Purifier
  • For Skin Disease
  • Digestion issues

 Turmeric is known to:

  • fight the effects of aging
  • protect against blood sugar imbalances
  • reduce inflammation and pain
  • protect the heart and nervous system
  • fight cancer and its effects

BioAvailability (how well it is used in the body)Many manufacturers have combined turmeric with black pepper based on a study that suggested this combination to be 20 times more bioavailable. Unfortunately this study has not been reproduced. If others cannot verify your discovery, you’ve got to question the validity of the results. Fortunately, multiple and repeated studies have discovered and confirmed the spice Fenugreek increases bioavailability 24.8 to 45.6 times. Turmeric with fenugreek also crosses the Blood-Brain-Barrier and stays available in the blood stream three times longer than turmeric alone.  Repeated Studies show that turmeric (especially when combined with fenugreek)

  • Reduces mental Fatigue
  • Increases Arterial Flexibility
  • Helps with Depression
  • helps with Diabetes
  • reduces Inflammation
  • increases microcirculation helping kidney function and eye health
  • alleviates Chronic Skin disorders
  • Lowers triglycerides and cholesterol
  • Helps with pain management
  • Supports and reduces autoimmune attacks on the body
  • helps with digestion particularly with GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disorder)
  • Used to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Helps to treat Fatty Liver Disease (non-alcoholic type)

WOW!! Turmeric is truly one of the great herbs that can benefit nearly everyone.

 Frankincense Boswellia species

  • One of the best CANCER fighters
  • Arthritis – reduces joint pain
  • Lowers Inflammation
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Bronchial Asthma

Blessings, Dr Kyle Christensen June 2018

I got the ‘machine’ for filling the capsules. It is a bit time consuming… but way less expensive than the Standard Process Turmeric Forte.

I began consuming the “Three Kings’ mixture of Turmeric, Frankincense, Myrrh & Fenugreek on Aug 15th  A person doesn’t get ill, overnight, so I must expect the benefits to not totally manifest benefits immediately.  The formula I use to approximate the time for significant health changes to begin to manifest is: 1 month for every decade of age.  Thus, I being 70+, marked my calendar Mid MARCH 0f 2019.. as a target, to decide if I wish to continue the protocol any longer…  I take three capsules, 3 times a day and have not noticed any  negative side effects.

Rock Steady Boxing

On The Invigorated Community testimonials keep popping up about how much Rock Steady Boxing has kept them going and how important it is in their plan of attack.

Yesterday morning, as I gave my grandsons their morning wakeup call, I noticed one of the boy’s punching bag and asked if I could borrow their gloves… which they promptly provided, cautioning me to not hit it so hard it fell into the mirror and breaks it. 🙂

I then wondered if I could find a workout on the internet. I learned there is a Physical Therapy that offers Rock Steady Boxing in the Villages near me. And after watching the informative videos below… I see there is a LOT more to it than just hitting a bag. The emphasis is on Forced Intense Workout.

Sparked by a conversation

As I visited with a couple of my friends while we ate lunch (in the temple lunchroom) yesterday, we were talking about my blog and health in general. A question came up: What supplements do you take?

“Funny you should ask”, I said. “I can’t hardly find time to put something on the blog, for researching other sites I find. Last night I found an eight part series by Dr. Mark Hyman about FUNCTIONAL Medicine. I was very impressed with how well he presented the concepts.’

I also found (and included excerpts from) an article where he listed the nutritional supplements he feels are most important.

I recommend everyone view at least #1 of the Dr.’s series, if you have, or know anyone with a ‘diagnosis’ of ADD, anxiety, depression, OCD, bi-bolar disorders, etc… https://brokenbrain.com/01-epidemic/

I already consume the supplements in his primary list.. AND I do not remember him mentioning the #1 medicine for Parkinson’s Consider intense exercise as your most important daily medicine.

These are excerpts from the article Written byMARK HYMAN, MD

Here’s How to Heal Our Broken Brains with Nutrients

What leads to a broken brain? Most of us never learn how to manage our energy and bodies. Instead, we use drugs like sugar, caffeine, and alcohol to self-medicate and manage our energy and moods. We don’t connect our behaviors and choices with how we feel.

The key insight is that your brain is an organ that’s connected to everything else happening in your body. Fixing your brain starts with fixing your body: optimizing all the inputs and taking out the bad influences. The brain is resilient and can recover and heal when given the right conditions. ……(see article)……………………Even if you do all those things correctly, you might not be getting the right amount of certain nutrients that support your brain and body. That’s where supplements come in.

Think of nutrients as fertilizer for your brain. These little helpers improve communication and connections. ………………………………… Here’s how I approach optimizing nutrient support.

Start with the Basics

These nutrients are foundational supplements that cover the bases you might not—probably aren’t—getting from food. They feed your body and feed your brain. I put nearly all my patients on these supplements.

When choosing supplements, you should absolutely choose quality products. Not all supplements are created equal, and the wrong supplements—those with things like potentially reactive fillers or inferior forms of nutrients—can create more harm than good.

Fortunately, even among professional brands, none of these supplements are expensive. These are the foundational supplements that I recommend everyone take:

  1.  A high-quality, high-potency, highly bioavailable, broad-spectrum multivitamin/mineral. This contains optimal amounts of the full range of vitamins and minerals in their correct forms. You will probably need to take 2 – 6 or more capsules (depending on the manufacturer’s recommended dose).
  2.  Extra magnesium. Research shows about 75 percent of us are deficient in this calming mineral that plays a part in over 300 enzymatic reactions in our bodies. Take 200 – 400 mg of magnesium citrate or glycinate before bed in addition to what is in your multi. This relaxes the nervous system and muscles while calming your brain.
  3.  Extra vitamin D3. Because so many of us work indoors all day, more than 80 percent of the US population has insufficient levels of vitamin D, which our bodies synthesize from sunlight. Research shows vitamin D deficiencies contribute to a wide range of problems including dementia. Ask your doctor for a vitamin D test and if your levels are low, work with him or her to optimize them.
  4.  Omega-3 fatty acids. Our brains are nearly 60 percent fat, so it should be no surprise that not getting sufficient dietary fat can adversely impact this organ. Chief among those fatty acids for your brain are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These omega-3 fatty acids are critical for supporting brain function and mood, regulating metabolism, and preventing diabetes and inflammation. Most of us need more than our food delivers, which is why I recommend a high-quality supplement.

  5.  Special methylation factors like folate, B6, and B12. Methylation is a key biochemical process essential for the proper function of almost all of your body’s systems. It occurs billions of times every second; it helps repair your DNA on a daily basis; it controls homocysteine (an unhealthy compound that can damage blood vessels); it helps recycle molecules needed for detoxification; and it helps maintain mood and keep inflammation in check. To keep methylation running smoothly you need optimal levels of these B vitamins. Without enough B vitamins methylation breaks down, and the results can be catastrophic. Your multi will contain some B vitamins, but I find many patients do well taking an additional B-complex multivitamin.
  6.  Probiotics. These beneficial bacteria can improve your digestion, reduce food allergies, and reduce gut inflammation. Gut health plays a powerful role in brain health. When you don’t have the right gut diversity, inflammation and things like leaky brain can occur, setting the stage for diverse problems ranging from brain fog to dementia.

Going Deeper with Supplements

I frequently use other supplements beyond these foundational nutrients to address specific brain conditions. (See the entire article at this link) https://drhyman.com/blog/2018/01/16/heres-heal-broken-brains-nutrients/

  1. Glutathione precursors. Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant that also recycles other antioxidants, which are critical for cleaning up free radicals. When left unchecked, these free radicals lead to massive cell destruction (including brain cells). A great way to get glutathione is with a lot of cruciferous rich vegetables such as broccoli and collards. Various supplements including lipoic acid, N-acetyl-cysteine, and quality grass-fed whey protein all serve as precursors to help your body make glutathione.
  2. Support your mitochondria. These little power plants in nearly all your cells fuel your brain and body. Nutritional deficiencies, low levels of antioxidants, exposure to toxins, allergens, infections, and stress can all damage your mitochondria. “If your mitochondria are not working very well, then that organ doesn’t work very well. In the brain, that means that you begin to have problems with fatigue, pain, irritability, and cognitive decline,” says Dr. Terry Wahls in our Broken Brain interview. Nutrients you can use to optimize mitochondria include L-carnitine, NADH, lipoic acid, and coenzyme Q10. When you don’t get enough of these nutrients, your mitochondria have a much more difficult time producing energy, compounding the problems they face from the onslaught of ever more free radicals. Your brain cells fire more slowly, your metabolism slows, and your ability to process toxins shuts down.
  3. Try calming nutrients. Mood disorders like anxiety and depression are at epic levels today. Fortunately, we have a wide array of supplement options to address these brain conditions. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a nutrient that calms the brain from too much of the neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine. It is like a brake on overstimulation in the brain. When you have low levels of GABA, it is harder for you to relax after your body has released these excitatory neurotransmitters. Other supplements that can improve conditions like depression and anxiety include L-theanine (an amino acid in green tea), 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), inositol (usually found as a powder), and herbs like Rhodiola rosea.

I recommend working with a Functional Medicine practitioner to address your particular supplement needs, though as I mentioned, nearly everyone will benefit from these foundational nutrients. I’ve gone into more detail about many of these and other nutrients in my Broken Braindocuseries. You can learn more about this cutting-edge series here.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Mark Hyman, MD
